In the summer of 2022, big school events could finally take place again. Shortly before the summer vacations, almost 2,200 pupils in Hamburg and 1,000 pupils in Bremen came together to compete in outdoor chess. With lively public participation, the chess masters of tomorrow put their skills to the test.
School events of a special kind inspired young chess players in Hamburg and Bremen shortly before the big vacations. In front of the town halls of the Hanseatic cities, JOKE was allowed to roll out the black and white checkered carpet or an XL chess tournament for them and set up the infrastructure for a competition with thousands of participants.
Finally getting together again without a care in the world to compete with other young players from all over the city. After the long Corona break, the outdoor chess tournaments were a very special experience for the students. In Hamburg, the traditional Alsterufer tournament – the largest school chess tournament in the world – was held outdoors for the first time since 1958. Despite light rain, the “Schach macht schlau” participants in Bremen didn’t let it take away from the fun of the game.
Great events to introduce pupils to the game of kings at an early stage and to strengthen the educational opportunities of all children. The driving forces behind this are two committed men from the worlds of education and sport – in Hamburg, the well-known principal Björn Lengwenus.
